The home of Michigan State Spartan Hockey, Munn Ice Arena is one of the finest college hockey facilities in the country. Dedicated on November 1, 1974; Munn Ice Arena has been the home of some of the greatest teams in Michigan State hockey history and welcomes the best crowds in college hockey.

Munn Ice Arena
Munn Ice Arena is named in honor of the late Spartan Football coach and Athletic Director Clarence L. "Biggie" Munn. During its inaugural season, Munn Ice Arena drew crowds totaling 118,875 attendees. Since then, loyal Spartan hockey fans have been filling Munn Ice Arena for over forty seasons.

Built into the natural slope of the rolling terrain, the structure gives the impression of being underground, since no external walls are visible. Clear span roof trusses form an angular roof profile and help provide acoustic control within the arena.

The building also is the site of the largest planting project on campus, enhancing the beauty of the facility. The surrounding area serves as a teaching and demonstration area for landscape architecture, botany and horticulture students.

Munn Ice Arena, designed by Daverman Associates of Grand Rapids, is the perfect place to watch a hockey game. Accessible from entrances on all four sides, the upper spectator viewing area offers excellent sight lines for all seating, ancillary public concourse facilities and ADA-compliant seating platforms. The lower level contains service areas for building maintenance, as well as offices and facilities for varsity, intramural and visiting teams. A training room, weight room, equipment room, and player's lounge are all located alongside the Spartan Hockey locker room.

As a hockey-only facility, Munn Ice Arena avoids the scheduling conflicts found in other buildings. The ice surface, sized at 200 feet-by-85-feet for North American-rules play, is maintained by an indirect refrigerant system.

Munn Ice Arena
To maintain its reputation as a first-class facility, Munn Ice Arena has recently undergone the following upgrades:
  • In 1999-2000, the press box was relocated to the east end of the south concourse, to go along with the addition of a club seating area. Private luxury boxes were added to the north side of the building as part of this upgrade.
  • Spring and Summer 2014, Munn Ice Arena underwent a complete replacement of the ice making equipment; as well as upgrades to the HVAC building cooling system. As part of this renovation, Munn Ice Arena also replaced the arena board and dasher glass system, which is safer and more user friendly.
  • December 2014, Munn Ice Arena upgraded to a HD video board over center ice, replacing the east/west end video boards which have been in use since the 2001-2002 season. Along with this enhancement, Munn Ice Arena replaced the two corner, fixed digit scoreboards and message boards with all new fixed digit scoreboards in all four corners. Munn Ice Arena was also fitted with LED Ribbon boards along the fascia of the Press Box/Club and Suite sides of the arena.
  • Spring and Summer 2015, Munn Ice Arena underwent a replacement of all the outdated bleacher seating in the arena. All new chairbacks were installed from concourse to ice level in the straightaways. The corner and end bleachers were upgraded to an aluminum bleacher system. Munn Ice Arena was also brought up to compliance with proper ADA platforms.
